I typically have a soft spot for off-brand cereals, but this was just a poor experience all around. I did give an extra point, however, because 15 ounces of Berry Bunch O’Krunch costs a little over half the price of a box of Cap’n Crunch with Crunch Berries (of the same weight). The real stuff is definitely worth the extra expense!
Family Gourmet is the store brand of the Family Dollar chain of discount retail stores across the United States. Family Dollar was founded in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1959. Today, it has expanded to more than 6,000 stores in over 40 states. It is a Fortune 500 company.
The Family Gourmet brand was introduced sometime in 2010, and features a number of inexpensive knock-offs of many popular big-brand cereals. Varieties include Berry Bunch O’Krunch, Frosted Flakes, and Fruity Whirls.
Overall, not great. Though it may seem unfair to some that this review is mostly comparisons to Froot Loops (rather than letting Fruity Whirls stand on its own merits), the fact is, these store brands are touted as seamless replacements for the big brands, and while it’s not stamped “compare-to Kellogg’s Froot Loops” on the package, that’s probably only because you can’t; there’s no comparison, Froot Loops is delicious, and Fruity Whirls is not.
