Cracklin’ Oat Bran (Kellogg's)
Cracklin’ Oat Bran tastes just like eating some kind of cookie for breakfast, but for real–not like Cookie Crisp, which, while delicious, tastes nothing like a cookie.
Part of the reason is the texture–it’s extremely dense and heavy, and you WILL feel full after the first spoonful. This is also one of those cereals that actually tastes better when it gets a bit soggy (see: Teddy Grahams Cereal). Cracklin’ Oat Bran absorbs the milk pretty well, but it does stay crunchy a surprisingly long time.
Visually, this is a really interesting cereal. Like Corn Pops, there’s nothing really to compare it to… I’m not even aware of any store-brand variations on it. The elongated, rectangular O pieces are pretty distinct, and inevitably crumble and break up into sand. It also turns the milk a weird gray color. That might turn some people off, but I say “who cares?”
Looking back, this review seems underwhelming, but Cracklin’ Oat Bran tops a lot of people’s favorite cereals lists, and after eating it it’s easy to see why. Like Rice Krispies Treats Cereal and Boo Berry, it can sometimes be a bit hard to come by, but it’s still out there–so when you spot it in the wild, be sure to grab a box.
